Take Advantage of Social Security’s “Spousal Benefits”

Did you know that you may be eligible to claim social security benefits based on your former spouse’s work history—and he/she won’t even know that you’re receiving the benefits? If you were married for at least 10 years, have been divorced for at least 2 years, are not currently married, and you and your former spouse have both reached age 62, you qualify for the spousal benefit. Additional information and applications can be found on the Social Security Administration’s website. To evaluate the best scenario for maximizing your social security benefits, try T. Rowe Price’s social security calculator.
