The Virginia Court of Appeals ruled last week in Hawkins v. Grese that a woman who had raised a child for seven years is not considered the child’s legal parent because she never married the child’s biological mother, despite the fact that same-sex marriage was illegal in all but two states during the course of their 10-year relationship.
