The Virginia General Assembly has approved House Bill 2289, which expands the court’s authority in divorce cases where spousal support is awarded to one party.
Assuming approval by the Governor, courts will be able to order a former spouse to maintain an existing or lapsed life insurance policy, designate the other party as beneficiary, allocate the premium cost of life insurance between the parties, and order the insured party to facilitate the provision of certain information from the insurer to the beneficiary.
